Week thirty three – April Ieremia’s weight loss diary

It’s nearly Christmas and the thought of feasting like a king has me salivating.

Like many people, our Christmas day is all about family, food and fun.

When you’re trying to lose weight, Christmas can be a minefield, because the food is the most delicious, irresistible and fattening on the planet.

If I’m being honest, it’s the dessert trolley that I want. My dream Christmas lunch would be a table of sweet stuff, with melt-in-your-mouth Pavlovas, brandy snaps and chocolate anything.

This year I’ve decided to be a lot more measured than usual, because I recently discovered that too much sugar ages you, as well as makes you fat. It’s made me rethink the usual death-by-chocolate routine.

I’ve given myself a weekend pass for Christmas Day to eat what I want, on the condition that I go for a run either before or afterwards.

For those of you who have tried to lose a lot of weight, you will know how hard it is to maintain the strenuous and mentally exhausting routine of exercising frequently and eating healthily.

You will appreciate the frequent occasions you have wished it was all over and the mental tennis that has ensued when you can’t be bothered any longer. It’s hard, but at the other end of the endurance test, every sacrifice ever made is worth it.

Thank you all for helping me to be in the best shape before Christmas ever. I finished just shy of my target, shedding 28.6kg to finish on 72kg.

Thank you to Scotty for being such a fabulously tough yet caring taskmaster.

And of course to the Weekly team for the opportunity to help others and myself feel this great.

Finding the most inspirational reader was incredibly difficult, as so many readers have done well.

The support and camaraderie is phenomenal. But we could only chose one person to come on a girls’ trip with me. We selected someone who has  been incredibly supportive on the April Loses It Facebook page and who not only lost a great deal of weight, but did it without the assistance of a trainer.

our congratulations go to Melanie oata from Wellington. After losing 21kg, Mel will leave her husband and children for a well-deserved dream holiday at the Pacific Resort at ouri Beach in Rarotonga with me.

Then we head to one of the most exquisite places in the world, Aitutaki. We’ll spend the day cruising the crystal blue waters. It’ll hopefully be the experience of a lifetime.

Well done, oel. I look forward to meeting you and don’t forget to pack your bikini!

oany thanks for joining me on this incredible journey. I wish you all a brilliant Christmas.

A note from Scott Cottier

Christmas is a great chance to let your hair down with family and friends. I believe you can and should eat what you like. Enjoy it. However, you must have the self-discipline to get back on track in the days after Christmas Day.

Huge congratulations to Mel for winning the trip. This is well deserved after all the sacrifices she has made. I wish you and April all the best on your fantastic holiday.

This is the end of the April Loses It journey but I will continue to help people to try to change their lifestyle for the better.
