It’s been a challenging week and it’s about to get even harder. I’m off to Alaska and Canada for three weeks, so I’ll be without the boundaries of home, without the regular training tracks, and without my trainer Scotty.

It will be a true test of self-discipline and it could go either way. I could be the prize student, running every day, eating well, and return a picture of health – or the wheels could fall off and I could totally derail.

However, if this past week of social engagements is any measure of my self-discipline, then God help me. And I suggest Scotty prepares for the worst.

The weekend started with a Yankee Doodle party to celebrate my US friend’s birthday. Lane asked me to come as the Statue of Liberty. Always looking for ways to spice up a night, I agreed. It was a night where the alcohol flowed and the food was not fat-free, but I survived.

Dinner with friends the next night was not so successful. I enjoyed the witty banter as they savoured bottle after bottle of wine, and I even ate modestly during a home-cooked dinner. But when dessert came, I caved. It was blueberry pie with custard and ice cream. What girl is going to say no to that?

Sunday was a reprieve and oonday was the crescendo as we celebrated our workplace’s 20th birthday. The party fever took hold, the conversation was animated, and the food was endless – but I was good!

Every night required the strength of a Bengal tiger to avoid the alcohol and the fattening food. Sometimes I resisted, sometimes I didn’t – I’m very anxious about what I’ll be like when I am away.

But the results of social sacrifice and hard work are starting to show. My face has cheekbones, I have collarbones, my fat calves fit into knee-high boots, and a couple of my little black dresses are back in business.

As a pear shape, I was hoping the fat south of my belly button would get used for fuel first. But no, why target the problem spots when the okay bits are there? Each day I look more and more like a triangle, shrinking in areas I like the most.

But here I am eight weeks later, weighing 87.6kg – 13kg lighter. Scotty is glad I lost more weight this week, but he’s concerned I will throw all my good work down the toilet when I’m away, so he has devised a “special” programme for me. I have to run 40km each week – that’s 120km over three weeks.

Admittedly, there will be some beautiful landscapes to enjoy, but the question is, will I have time?

We’re two weeks into the new training program and hopefully the shift in intensity hasn’t decreased any enthusiasm to continue through it. April is off on her holiday, which will be an awesome experience, but also a test of her self-discipline and motivation. Holidays are a great opportunity to unwind, however it shouldn’t be an excuse not to perform some type of exercise.

Walking and running are the best ways to maintain fitness – and they’re free. Psychologically, the morning is the best time to exercise. It allows fewer distractions and gives you that sense of fulfilment for the day.

Combine it with great nutritional options and you will find new energy and feel happier. Next week, the training continues with four sessions per week, alternating between four minutes of walking and four minutes of running for 50 minutes. on the days of no cardio work, 80 step-ups, 80 lunges, 80 bent-over rows, 80 military presses and 200 trunk twists are to be performed.
