Now To Love‘s Health Editor Sinead Corcoran is on a mission to get back in shape, and has enlisted the help of personal trainer Rhys Jolly.
He’s known around town as Coach Rhys, and has trained everyone from top athletes, busy CEO’s, new mums and Kiwi celebrities – and now he’s stepped in to help Sinead find her motivation to enjoy exercising again, eat better and feel good about her body.
In Week One we introduced Sinead and Rhys, and this week we are checking in with Sinead on how her new diet and exercise regime is going, seven weeks in.
Week 7
I’m now almost two months into my three-month programme with Coach Rhys, and I’ve lost about 6 kgs so far.
While I don’t think I look much thinner overall, I can definitely notice a difference in my stomach and face, as my stomach feels way flatter and my cheeks aren’t so chubby.
I’m still training with Rhys three times a week, and our workouts are different every time – but we usually do high intensity stuff like burpee, sprints and whipping those rope things in the air like giant snakes.
Eating-wise, I’ve sort of given up on the plain chicken and brocolli thing I was doing every day for lunch and dinner as I got so sick of that.
I’m still sticking to meat and salad – just mixing it up a bit between chicken, lamb and beef and different kinds of vegetables to stop it getting too boring.
For breakfast most days I’ll have a protein shake if I’ve come in from the gym, otherwise I’ll have a couple of hard boiled eggs which I’m obsessed with. I could eat 100 hard boiled eggs I love them so much!
That’s what it’s all about I reckon, just finding healthy stuff that you love just as much as donuts and other delicious things that aren’t so good for you.
During the week on the days that I don’t train with Rhys, I usually do a class at Les Mills. Grit is my favourite one as even though it’s so hard and awful and you feel like you might die, it’s only half an hour so you can just look at the clock in desperation and count down the minutes and know that it will be over soon and you will be free.
Grit isn’t for everyone at it is VERY INTENSE and tough as guts, but if you’re like me and you just want to run in and get the horrors over with quickly and then run out again – definitely give it a try as it’s your best bet at a short sharp snappy workout that actually makes you fit really quickly.
When the weekend rolls around I’m not as intense with my healthy eating as I still want to live my life – but now instead of going out to brunch on a Saturday and ordering eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce and a potato rosti, and a flat white and an orange juice and maybe a chocolate milkshake (I love beverages) I’ll try to rein it in and just get eggs and mushrooms with a bit of hollandaise on the side, and a long black.
That way I’m still living my fun weekend life and not missing out on the yum stuff, I’m just making more healthy choices. It’s about balance eh!
