Men are twice as likely as women to have sleep apnoea, a disorder that causes you to stop breathing while you’re asleep. It is linked to several worrying problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, adult asthma, acid reflux and fatigue due to sleep disruption.
Ways to avoid it:
• Stay a healthy weight. Being overweight is a risk factor as fatty deposits in the neck can block breathing at night. Improve your diet and exercise regimen.
• Avoid alcohol, cigarettes and sleeping pills.
• Try to sleep on your side, rather than your back.
