A Kiwi designer has developed a new type of cast for broken limbs. It resembles a fishnet stocking and is a lightweight alternative to bulky plaster and fibreglass versions.
Dreamed up by former Victoria University student Jake Evill, and known as Cortex, the cast is made from a light, yet tough plastic and is tailor-made to fit the patient’s limb.
It is still in the prototype stage, but the network of holes it features means it’s easy to scratch the skin underneath the cast. Because you can clean the limb with it on, it prevents the smell associated with traditional casts and is so thin it can be worn under a shirt.
