Having a low boredom threshold is often linked to such things as gambling, alcoholism and drug abuse.
However, constantly craving stimulation through new experiences also keeps you healthy, according to Dr Robert Cloninger, professor of psychiatry and genetics at Washington State University.
He tracked thousands of people over ten years and found those with a sense of adventure, combined with focus, report the best health, fewest emotional problems and greatest satisfaction with life.
Professor Craig Jackson, a psychologist at Birmingham City University, points to a study where volunteers were traumatised by videos of drink-driving injuries. A third talked through their experience, a third were left alone and the remainder played a video game to distract them; the final group adjusted best.
