Diverticulitis occurs when small pouches, known as diverticula, that form in your digestive tract – often in your large intestine – become inflamed or infected. It is especially common in people over 50, and symptoms can range from mild pain, fever, nausea and a change in bowel habits, through to life-threatening infection.
Mild cases of diverticulitis can be treated with rest, dietary changes and antibiotics. However, serious cases may require surgery.
