Hives are an outbreak of swollen, pale red bumps on the skin, that usually appear as the result of an allergic reaction.
They tend to cause itching, but can also burn or sting.
They may appear anywhere and can vary in size from the end of a pencil to a small plate.
Causes of hives can include insect stings, reactions to certain foods or medication and exposure to sunlight.
But in some cases it is impossible to work out what has triggered them.
As removing or avoiding the substance that caused them is usually the best form of treatment, it helps if you can figure out what brought your hives on.
Skin tests may be performed and antihistamines can provide relief.
In severe cases, corticosteroids may be prescribed. Applying a cool, wet cloth to the area may ease the itching.
If you experience other symptoms, such as dizziness, wheezing, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing and swelling, get medical help straight away.
You could be having a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.
