The 69th annual Met Gala held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is fashion’s big night out for the year.

This year’s exhibition subject, and gala theme, Rei Kawakubo’s designs for Comme des Garçons, is a celebration of the Japanese visionary’s avant-garde designs and ability to challenge beauty, good taste, and fashionability norms.

Although a lot of fashion celebrities left a lot to be desired this year, in tame evening dresses, seeing the glamorous stars that often wear a sleek, sparkly number don suitably more daring and curvaceous creations is a refreshing phenomenon to behold.

Naomi Larkin, editor: Aymeline Valade in Marni.

“Great cut, great colour and the sparkle is a nod to the evening event – but I’d leave the green polo neck at home.”

Louise Hilsz, fashion and style editor: Katy Perry in custom John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

“Always pushing the envelope, Katy Perry never goes unnoticed.”

Sylvie Horton, art director: Rihanna in Comme des Garçons.

“No one else comes close to Riri – she nailed it.”

Elise Wilson, beauty editor: Lily Collins in Giambattista Valli.

“Her bob channels Rei Kawakubo’s own hair style and her make-up is perfection with this look.”

Jessica-Belle Greer, writer: Dakota Johnson in Gucci.

“Dakota paid homage to Kawakubo’s signature volumes and ruffles in a refreshingly dramatic dress.”
