Designed and manufactured in New Zealand, Liann Bellis is a label that prides itself on providing comfortable, luxurious clothing for Kiwi women. We talk to designer Leanne Greaves about her summer collection, Fluid.

Where did the name for your label come from?

Previously my name was Leanne Bellis and at that time I had a childrenswear clothing label. The spelling of ‘Liann’ is different to what I use in everyday life, so I guess it’s sort of like my alter ego.

What made you change from childrenswear to womenswear?

I did childrenswear because I had such a great passion for it. But when the recession hit, it wasn’t a good idea to carry it on and everyone was saying, ‘Oh come on, do womenswear,’ so I did!

What inspires your collections?

For my new summer collection it’s family time around the pool over summer. The fabrics mirror this – I wanted loose but strong clothing that was comfortable and easy to wear. That’s where ‘Fluid’ gets its name, because it is all about what you do with water and water activities.

What defines fabric that is comfortable and low maintenance?

I love to use natural fabrics along with manmade synthetics. Many fabrics today come in great serviceable combinations.

Who do you envision when you design your clothes?

I make them for me and what I think I need.

How do you ensure your pieces work for all ages?

I consider a variety of hem lengths, sleeve lengths, necklines and general fit.

What wardrobe item looks good on anyone, no matter their age?

A dress. In my mind the perfect dress is the ‘Amazing’ dress from the Fluid collection because it will look great on women of any shape, size or age.
