Richmond, Virginia resident Meagan Abell got the surprise of her life last month after finding a set of stunning old photographs during a visit to a thrift shop.

The pictures show two women strolling along a beach, lit by a beautiful sunset backdrop. After finding the film negatives and having them scanned, Meagan was moved by the gorgeous photos and shared them on Facebook in an attempt to discover who the mystery photographer and models were.

“I found 4 sets of medium format negatives while I was thrift shop hunting a few weeks ago. They were sitting in a box of old vintage photographs in these plastic sleeves, and from what I could tell, they had been taken sometime in the 50’s,” she writes in her Facebook post.

“So obviously I brought them home, and today finally had them scanned in, and holy wow they are beautiful!!”

The haunting, moody photographs have struck a chord with many people around the world, with many commenters describing a range of emotions as they viewed the mysterious pictures.

“The colors in this picture are so soft and feminine, peaceful but as you continue looking at the photos you do not feel at peace but kind of sad and lonely like the world can be at times,” wrote Laura Perry.

Some compared the pictures to the work of Vivian Maier, a Chicago-based nanny whose now-iconic street photographs flew under the radar for years, until the negatives were discovered at a storage locker auction.

One commenter said the pictures reminded him of a classic Hitchcock heroine “on the brink of something sinister”.

The photos are now being shared online under the hashtag ‪#‎FindTheGirlsOnTheNegatives‬, so users can share information about the mysterious pictures.
