Before you venture out to the shops, consider what you’re looking for in a watch and which type will suit your needs.
Some things to consider:
Wearability
Planning on wearing your watch every day? Think about what your watch is likely to have to withstand. Is it likely to get knocked around? Exposed to the elements? Immersed in water? Pick your materials accordingly.
If you live an active lifestyle, a sports-style watch is your best bet. Many of these are now largely made of rubber, meaning they’re comfortable, waterproof and less likely to be damaged by cosmetics, perfumes or general wear and tear. Sports watches are a casual-wear option.
If you’re looking for a more classic look, suitable for work and weekends, go for stainless steel or a leather strap. Leather straps can be more comfortable, but do need a bit of TLC. Exposure to sunlight will fade the straps overtime. Leather is also a permeable material, so avoid getting it wet and watch out for oily substances, cosmetics and perfumes, as they will all stain your strap. If you wear it every day, you should expect to replace the strap after nine to 12 months. Stainless steel is more durable, hardwearing option. Clean it carefully every two months and anytime it is exposed to salt water.
Face shape
There are three standard watch shapes to choose from: Round, rectangular or square. A round watch-face is a traditional choice. Rectangular is chic, and square can be quite a masculine, edgy option.
Readability
Is your watch more likely to be a fashion statement or purely for function? If it’s the latter, readability is key. If you can’t decipher the time from a quick glance at your watch, move on.
Happy shopping!
