THURSDAY, AUGUST 25

Wednesday was rounded up with the welcome return of homegrown streetwear label Federation back to NZFW. Fur, pleats, camouflage and signature prints charged down the catwalk to thumping hip hop.

Later that night Stolen Girlfriends Club had their show offsite. Their collection riffed on the expected grunge aesthetic but this time the clothing was more refined with a standout daffodil print that carried throughout the range – and it was styled by the uber cool dynamic duo of Seb McGirr Hunt and Dylan Richards.

Thursday started with sequins and tiaras from Kharl-William Wirepa.

Next up was the NZFW Graduate Show where I was blown away by the collections from Massey University graduates Megan Stewart and Sarah Parker. It’s so exciting to see such fearless design choices coming through from the next generation. Not For You with its utilitarian influences also impressed.

During the Miromoda presentation the stand out for me was the sculptural monochromatic pieces with a pop culture crossover from Tihi King.

Carena West showed her range of swimwear which included velvet pieces and a burkini.

The Malaysian Fashion Initiative group show was next showcasing talent from the country.

Rochelle’s ‘Renewal’ collection was shown with a DJ playing dance music as well as Stan Walker coming out and performing two songs while the models walked around him. And last but not least, the finale piece was worn by the statuesque Maria Tutaia.

The Resene Designer Runway which showcases in-season collections had a stand out finale from Jockey featuring Matilda Rice and five hot rugby men all in their Jockey’s walking the runway to screams from the audience.

Huffer rounded out the night with an offsite show in Britomart where they showed a combination of the upcoming AW17 collection along with archival pieces.
