Luxurious leather fashion

Leather is a timeless look that gives an air of luxury, yet is easy to wear with just about anything. Leather works day or night, giving a girlie dress a sexy edge and a pair of jeans a rock 'n' roll feel. Leather jackets can be an investment and you do get what you pay for - cheaper leather tends to be harder and can toughen and crack over time. Good-quality leather gets better with age - it will be a luxury purchase you won't regret. My advice is to spend as much as you can on a classic style.

Colours:

  • If you already have a basic black leather jacket, or black simply doesn’t look good on you, there are plenty of neutral colour options that will slip into your wardrobe and work with most colours. The best options are charcoal, creams and browns.

  • A friend recently invested in a gorgeous soft grey leather jacket and asked me if she had to find winter boots in the same colour to match. oatching jackets, bags and shoes perfectly can look overworked – similar tones work better.

It’s very important that you look after leather if you want it to stay looking good for many seasons. Here are some tips for taking care of it:

  • Leather is a lot like our skin – if it’s not treated it can dry out. As soon as you purchase an item made of leather, you should spray it with a leather protector. This is a colourless spray that you can purchase from shoe stores or shoe repairers at an affordable price. Follow the instructions on the can but don’t worry if the colour darkens when first sprayed – it will go back to normal when dry. The liquid will form a protective coating and will also improve the chances of being able to wipe marks off the leather if you spill anything on it. Re-spray the garment every six months.

  • If you do spill something on leather, sponge it with warm water. If it won’t budge, use a mild detergent. Harsh chemicals could bleachthe colour and leave a bigger mess.

Rock chic

  • Get the rock chic look this season in black leather. Sandy in the movie Grease may have got away with wearing a full leather outfit, but most of us should stick to separates. If you do want to wear leather leggings with a leather jacket, make sure you wear a dress or shirt over the leggings to soften the look.

Fur trims

  • For added warmth and comfort, opt for a leather jacket with a fur lining or neck detail – you will

love the softness. Fur detail jackets in an aviator style look casual and are perfect for holidays and weekends. If you are looking for a jacket that you can wear on any occasion, it’s best you go for a classic style, or a jacket that has a removable fur trim.
