Forget tight dresses and stuffy fabrics – this summer, embrace your inner tomboy with our guide on how to work with the sporty trend.
Seek inspiration from different sports. Think American football for shoulder pads and cross-laced tops, reminiscent of football boots. Tennis invokes preppy dresses, colourful visors and ofcourse, the white tennis shoe. A simple way to ‘sportify’ an outfit is to throw on a pair of plain white or black lace up tennis sneakers.
The key is to match pretty with active – you don’t want to look like you’ve actually had a 20-minute sweat session. Pair a sports jacket with a colourful floaty top, or swap trackpants with slim leggings. Alternatively, search for girly items with a sporty edge, such as feature zips, buckles or toggles.
For exercise, many brands have developed high-technology fabrics desgined to allow maximum
movement, as well as air circulation. Theres nothing worse than feeling hot or restricted when trying to hold that yoga pose. Popular sport labels have also taken to collaborating with designers, yielding the prettiest, most versatile womens sportswear yet.
If you like to cover your bottom and hip area, or are scared to wear a crop top on its own, wear a dark-coloured tank underneath. Lighter colours will attract the eye and the darker colour will recede, so a light crop top or t-shirt over a dark tank will make you appear slimmer through that tricky area.
Still very popular, harem pants have a comfortable slouchy feel and are a great alternative to leggings.
For those who are not used to this look, start with accessories. A simple headband, colourful duffel bag or sporty watch is all you need to add a touch of tomboy to any outfit.
