How to find the perfect jeans

Shopping for jeans used to be as simple as requesting Levi’s 501s but now we’re overwhelmed by choice – stretch-fit, bootcut, skinny, hipster, flares. The most flattering style for any body shape is a slightly flared leg or a boot cut, with a low-rise waist, as it gives room for curves and balances the width of the hips.

It’s worth finding out which brands use quality denim – sometimes the more expensive jeans are made from sturdier, finer fabric so they’re soft yet structured and will last longer.

But the real key is to find your most comfortable pair. So give them a wriggle, sit down and check the waistband doesn’t stick out at the back (too big) or if the denim bulges at the thigh (too small).

The most important area to consider is the rise (the waistband to the crotch). It should sit comfortably without bunching or creasing. Check the fit around your derriere too and be aware that the higher the pockets, the bigger your butt will appear.

If you’re determined to go for a fashionable style, remember baggy jeans can make you look bigger than you are, tapered or skinny jeans will accentuate curves and high-waisted jeans draw the eye to the hips.

Stretch denim gives a better fit as it moulds to your body. But it can also highlight flab and may lose its shape faster than regular denim.

Now that’s sorted, all you need to pick is your wash!
