New Zealand designer Amy-Rose Goulding allows her adventurous alter ego to shine in her fashion label Julian Danger, which features both timeless classics and edgy pieces for women of all ages.

Where did you get the name Julian Danger?

Julian is my twin brother’s name; it was really a tribute to him and his outrageous character. I’m a bit more conservative and it was a way to have this more dangerous alter ego personality.

Where do you find your inspiration?

It evolves every season. I take a lot of inspiration from the fabrics and colours when I’m in China at the markets. I also work off what’s selling well and what people are wearing with the brand.

What is the best piece of fashion advice you have ever been given?

In recent years my mum and her contemporaries would look at my collections and say, “We would wear this if…”! It was all about length and cut, and it made me realise I needed to design for a wider demographic – not just what I want to wear. It was advice that really got me thinking about hemlines, sleeves and necklines.

What’s your best piece of fashion advice?

Be brave and wear what you feel comfortable in.

What trends do you see evolving this summer?

There will be quite a lot of white denim and a bit of frill and floral.

What is the one piece every woman needs in her summer wardrobe?

A loose-fitting shirt. It can take you anywhere – to the beach, work, out for dinner – especially if you choose a gorgeous fabric.

What advice would you give to women who want to change up their wardrobes a bit?
