Colour blocking – all you need to know

Colour blocking is one of the key trends for spring-summer. Mixing colours in a contrasting or complementary manor is popular on the runways at the moment.

For the full effect of this trend it’s best to do it from head to toe, accentuating the look with bright shoes, scarves and bags. Colour blocking this season has been dominated by shades of orange, from almost-red tones through to fluoro.

If you are a little put off by full-on colour, cool the look down with creams and soft neutrals. Go for grey or nude-coloured shoes that will not compete with the colour. Black works with block colours, but it does create a striking contrast. If subtlety is what you’re after, neutral combinations will keep you looking fresh and current.

Colour blocking is the perfect way to use what you already have tucked away at the back of your wardrobe. Pull out all the block-coloured items, as well as any neutrals, stand back and see how many combinations you can create. Be bold and have fun!

Top tips:

  • A simple dress can be updated by adding accessories. I love the range of 100% silk scarves from Glassons. They are super-fine and come in a range of colours. If you don’t like wearing things around your neck, tie your scarf to the handle of your handbag to add a pop of colour

  • While you wait for the weather to warm up, wear your colour-block skirts and dresses with opaque tights. Your shoes should be the same tone as your tights. This creates a seamless look. Also, too many colour breaks will look over the top – stick to a maximum of three colours

  • Colour blocking neutrals is also very effective. Try lifting denim by pairing it with khaki or mustard tops. Add some bright accessories and you will be bang on trend
