Autumn trend: 70’s glamour

With autumn fast approaching, we take a look at one of the most prominent fashion trends to hit the runway.

70’s glamour is back – on the catwalk and in the streets, hemlines are lengthening. Below we provide a beginner’s guide on how to nail this trend without looking like you’ve stepped out of a time machine.

  • The key piece for this look is the flared pant. Go from softer, floaty fabrics to heavier makes as the temperatures cool. Balance is important – don’t lose your silhouette amongst swaths of fabric. If you’re wearing this pant, keep your upper half simple with a fitted silk blouse or plain knit. Accentuate your waist with a slim belt.

  • The 70’s colour palette is essentially earthy, but head-to-toe brown will age the outfit (and you). Break up your pieces with pops of yellow, forest green and deep purple. These colours are easily incorporated using accessories such as gloves, scarves and belts

  • Hair is long, with loose waves and a generally natural feel. If you’re going out on the town, experiment with feather hair extensions. These can be bought in a range of colours, from natural to funky, and are easy to apply. For the office, opt for a slicked back bun secured at the nape of the neck.

  • Capes, trench coats and macs are the outwears of choice this autumn. Keep colours simple for versatility, or splash out on a bright print.

  • Shoes are platform-highs, with embellishments such as tassels, buckles and faux shearing linings.

  • Go all out with evening dresses – 70’s glamour is all about maxi dresses in flowing fabrics, plunging necklines and high dress splits. Dare to bare, and leave the accessories minimal so the dress can speak for itself.
