**Question:

** Later this year we are embarking on a 3 month driving/camping holiday around Europe.  I need ideas for wardrobe basics which will take me from walking around cities to day hikes in the mountains, swimming and eating out, and it all needs to fit in one suitcase.

Answer:

  • A light-weight water-proof jacket will keep you cool in warm temperatures, but protected in the case rain or wind

  • A merino singlet or long sleeve top is an essential in case the temperature drops. The wool will give you warmth under your clothes and the fine gage will avoid you feeling bulky)

  • Comfortable shoes! The best thing about traveling is exploring the sights on foot so you want to be confident that your shoes will allow you to do so without causing you pain or blisters. Pack the minimum amount of pairs in subtle colours only to blend seamlessly with any outfit.

  • Loose and light shirts (e.g. Kaftans) are great because they protect you from the sun and keep you cool. They can be hand washed in the evening and hung up to dry overnight and have room for warm layer underneath if needed.

  • 3/4 or long lightweight trousers. These are very practical and a conservative must for visiting dress-sensitive cultural and religious sights.

  • For eating out or more dressed up occasions take oNE appropriate outfit only. A dress is a good option as it’s an outfit all in one.

  • Before you start packing, write yourself a list of what you will NEED. This will help you remember everything and if you stay true to exactly what’s on it, you will avoid adding unnecessary ‘just in case’ pieces and over-packing.

  • Avoid white or light-coloured pieces as they soil easily and regular washing facilities may not be available often.

  • Do not pack too many shoes! They are heavy and you will not wear them all. Stick to 2-3, one sandal or jandal, one closed-toe or lace-up style and if you think you will require them one dressed up style.

  • Don’t pack your best jewellery, you won’t want the draw attention of thieves.

  • Wrinkle look fabrics are perfect as they don’t need ironing and can be packed tightly into your suitcase without a second thought.
