Winter skin care

Use natural oils to protect and soothe your skin against the harsh winter weather

These days we’re happy to use oils in our hair, but what about on our skin? Concerns about breakouts, high shine and clogged pores often act as a deterrent. However, adding the right kind to your regime will give you healthier, suppler skin, plus keep it guarded from the worst our weather can do.

NEED TO KNOW

• Starting from our late thirties, our skin produces less of the natural oils that keep it healthy so wrinkles look more obvious. Oils can plump the skin with moisture and replenish the lipid barrier so it protects itself better and is less likely to dry out.

• Plant and seed oils are rich in vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids.

• They have a molecular structure that can easily absorb into the layers of the epidermis, making them the perfect carrier to deliver nutrients.

• Ideal for sensitive skins, oils don’t require the same preservative systems as creams/lotions and fewer ingredients mean less chance of irritation.

• Cheap products can clog pores, but high-quality, pure plant ones can help restore balance, preventing congestion.

LOCKING IT IN

Apply on freshly washed, damp skin to help lock in moisture. Put a few drops into the palms of your hands and warm before patting onto the face and neck, then massaging gently. Wait at least a couple of minutes before using sunscreen or foundation.

GREAT AND THE GOOD

• Use rosehip for dehydrated and ageing skin, as well as scars and stretch marks.

• Argan, calendula and borage seed help prevent inflammation.

• Avocado is rich in vitamin E and useful for dry, itchy, ageing and sun-damaged skins.

• Dilo helps regenerate tissue, heal and hydrate.

• Macadamia is recommended for mature and sensitive skins.

• Pomegranate is a powerful antioxidant and wrinkle fighter.

• Sweet almond is non-greasy and great for all skin types.

• Apricot kernel is light, gentle and balancing.

• Wheatgerm has benefits for those with very damaged skin or conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

• Evening primrose helps prevent clogged pores, so is useful for anyone who is prone to acne.

WHO LOVES THEM?

Face oils have been used by women for thousands of years. They are hot backstage at fashion shows – make-up artists use them to give models a dewy glow. Lots of celebs are fans too, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma Stone and Miranda Kerr, as they nourish without exposure to chemicals.
