Whether you prefer a classic neutral or this season’s on-trend shade “radiant orchid”, now’s the time to treat your nails to a primp and polish.

 Colour of the year

The year’s hottest hue is “radiant orchid”, a fresh blend of purple and pink. That’s according to the Pantone Color Institute, who comb the world looking for influences in everything from art to movies before deciding the on-trend shade. You’ll see radiant orchid in everything from homewares to fashion.

It’s also gorgeous on nails since it blends both cool and warm undertones, and flatters most skin types. It’s a vibrant contrast to the grey beige and taupe naturals that tend to be popular in winter. Try Maybelline NY Color Show Nails in Fuschia Fever $8.49, Essie Nail lacquer in The Lace Is On $22.99, Orly Color Blast in Magenta $14.99, Ulta 3 Nail polish in Spring Break $4, Revlon Nail Enamel in Oi Beautiful $16.50.

Neutrals

Subtle and professional, neutrals can still make a statement. They’re also an ideal base for nail art. Just be sure the polish finish is opaque, not sheer, and that the shade complements your skin tone.

Most look good in a pale or pinky beige such as MUD nail polish in Nudely Now $5 (1), Orly Color Blast in Nude Crème $14.99 (2) or CND Vinylux Weekly Nail Polish in Impossibly Plush $19.95 (3).

Brighten and flatter

Greys are edgy but not as harsh as black. Try Essie Nail Enamel in Cashmere Bathrobe $22.99, a dark grey with a hint of shimmer, Revlon Nail Enamel in Iconic for a dramatic look, or a soft grey YSL La Laque Couture in Gris Underground $47.

Longer lasting

Use a base coat, two layers of colour and a top coat such as Essie No Chips Ahead $24.99 and re-apply more top coat every couple of days. Base coats should be slightly sticky to bond the polish to the nail surface and top coats should dry to a hard finish so, while two-in-one products are available, they’re not going to be as effective.

CND Vinylux is a two-step system that’s fast-drying and longer lasting. You need to use both the polish and the top coat, and let it toughen up in natural light. It can be wiped off easily with acetone remover.
