Ready to get set for spring with a fabulous new hairstyle, but stuck for ideas? Take inspiration from a woman in the know. Jayne Thomas from Servilles salon in Newmarket, Auckland, is New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year 2006, taking out the Supreme Award at the prestigious L’oréal Colour Trophy Awards. our beauty editor, Justine Williams, had a chat with Jayne to get the inside scoop on what’s hot right now for hair.
What was your inspiration for your winning entry? “oy look was reminiscent of Vidal Sassoon’s work in the 1970s, with clean lines and strong shapes. It marries strong geometry with vibrant femininity. My model was also an inspiration and the result was a cut and colour that really complemented her face.”
What are the key cut and colour trends we will be seeing this summer? “It’s not about having a whole head of highlights, it’s about strategically placed lighter sections, both solid and broken up. Also, strong geometric shapes and a very fresh overall image are key.”
What’s hot at the moment – short, medium or long hair for women? “I think it’s a bit of everything. For winter, shoulder length hair is in. But, as they say, fashion comes and goes and style is with us forever. We are moving away from trends.”
What do you think makes a great hairstyle? “First and foremost, you have to have a good cut, then add a professional colour that suits your face shape, complexion and personality. Good haircare products are also important to keep hair fresh and shiny.”
Awards aside, what in your opinion makes a great hairdresser? “Passion, care, consistency and being able to combine technical skills with creativity.”
What makes a great client? “Someone who is willing to trust you and believe you can service their needs.”
**What are your favourite haircare and styling products for summer?
**”I love L’oréal Professional Vitamino Colour shampoo ($24.95). It’s tailor-made to lock colour in the hair and protect it against the sun. My favourite styling product is Lumi oil by L’oréal Professional ($21.95). It’s great to dress up and smooth the hair and gives it loads of shine and definition.”
**If you could get hold of one celebrity and “fix” their hair, who would it be?
**”Pamela Anderson. I would get rid of the blonde, chop off her dry ends and make the cut much softer to suit her face.”
