The truth about toners

Beauty experts are always saying things like, “Make sure to cleanse, tone and moisturise every day.” Last week I focused on cleansers – this week, it’s time to talk about toning.

What is toning? And do you really need to do it? Toners are clear liquids that go by names such as clarifying lotions, toning lotions, tonics, balancers, astringents and skin purifiers. In days gone by, toners were primarily made of alcohol and designed to restore the skin’s balance after cleansing.

Today, toners are made of far more gentle and varied ingredients like witch hazel or nourishing botanicals – but the aim is still to refine the appearance of pores and balance the skin after cleansing by ensuring all trace of cleanser is removed, along with excess oil from the skin’s surface.

oodern toners are carefully designed to meet the needs of different skin types. They work particularly well when teamed with a cleanser from the same range. But I have to admit, if you wanted to remove a step from your daily skincare routine, toning would be the step you could skip.

Personally, I like using a toner – I find it refreshes my skin and makes it feel more ready to accept that desperately needed serum and moisturiser. But if your budget is stretched or you’re in a hurry to get out the door in the morning, toning isn’t essential.
