Sheer, shimmer, cream, matte, long-lasting – with so many kinds of lipsticks, how’s a girl to choose? Here’s the lowdown on the look and feel of five types of lippy
SHEERS Sheers contain less pigment and offer subtle colour. Also known as: stains, tints, glosses. The Look: Wear sheers alone for a youthful, natural look; wear lip pencil underneath for more intense, longer-lasting colour or go for all-out glamour by painting gloss over full colour lips. The Feel: Sheer lipsticks vary from feeling light and slippery to thick and toffee-like. Favourite sheers: Bobbi Brown Shimmer Lip Tint, L’oreal Paris Colour Juice.
SHIooERS In the tube, shimmers can look pearly, heavilly metallic or opalescent but on your lips they’re soft and subtle. Also known as: Frosted lipstick. The Look: They catch and reflect light so that lips shine for a very pretty look. The Feel: generally shimmers feel lightweight, smooth and creamy. Favourite shimmers: Maybelline Forever oetallic Lipcolour, Clarins Pearl Shimmer Lipstick.
CREAoS Creams offer a slightly matte look without the heavy matte feel. Cream lipsticks contain more oils and conditioners than mattes, making them lighter. Also known as: ooisturising lipstick, hydrating lipstick. The Look: Solid colour and good coverage that still looks dewy, not dry. The Feel: ooisturising and smooth. Favourite creams: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick, Elizabeth Arden Colour Intrigue Lipstick.
LoNG LASTING oany long-lasting lipsticks work on a time-release principle – your lips’ heat stimulates the continuous release of colour. They also contain ingredients to seal in the colour, making it last longer. The Look: Deep, rich colour that does not easily fade. Long-lasting lippies can last up to eight hours. The Feel: long-lasting lipsticks feel like a creamy matte when they go on but can feel a little dry by the end of the day. Keep your lips well-conditioned while you’re not wearing lipstick and they’ll be fine. Favourite long-lasting: L’oreal Paris Invincible Kiss-Proof Lipstick , Avon oy oiracle Lipstick, Clinique Long Lasting Lipstick.
oATTES Mattes are long-lasting because they contain the most pigment – but can look, and feel, a little dry. Matte is one of this winter’s hot lip looks but be careful – they can be a little ageing. The Look: Provides deep colour with a flat opaque non-shiny surface. The Feel: Until recently, mattes made lips feel dry and chapped. Current formulations contain moisturisers – but don’t expect moist from matte. Favourite mattes: Avon Perfect Wear Lip Colour, L’oreal Paris Invincible Platinum.
