Smart suntanning

While it is ideal to avoid the harmful rays of the sun altogether (by wearing long sleeved tops, wide brimmed hats and UV protecting sunglasses), some of us do like to get a brown glow during the summer months.

So if you’re heading for the beach this summer, how can you soak up some rays in a safe fashion? The most important point is to never forget your sunblock. Even if it slows down the rate at which you tan, sunblock is so important to block out harmful UV rays and avoid skin cancer down the track.

only stay directly in the sun for periods of ten minutes or less and never go out during the hottest time of the day (between 10am and 2pm) when the sun does the most damage.

You may want to consider avoiding sun tanning altogether and heading down the route of those paler A-list stars such as Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett (who are curiously, both Australian).

For those of you who are desperate for an LA style tan, look into sunless tanning options as a safer way to enjoy a lustrous glow, but with less damage to your skin.
