The ritual of cleaning the day’s grit and grime from your face is possibly the most important step in your beauty routine. But all too often, cleansing is the one skincare step we get wrong.
If you’re overenthusiastic or you’re using the wrong product, you run the risk of interfering with the essential barrier function of your skin, letting much-needed moisture out and potential irritants in. Damage done through cleansing can allow ingredients that should sit on the skin’s surface to get into the skin and cause sensitivity.
often we can find ourselves believing that our skin has reacted badly to a certain make-up or sunscreen when the problem may be our cleanser. Conversely, if you don’t cleanse your skin gently but thoroughly, you will find your moisturiser will simply sit on top of the skin’s surface, unable to penetrate deep enough to do its job.
How to cleanse your face: 1. Always wash your hands before you start. 2. Secure your hair back. 3. Smooth your cleanser all over your face and neck (from your collarbone to your hairline). Gently massage all over your face. 4. Allow the cleanser to stay on the skin for a moment to interact with dirt and make-up. 5. Remove cleanser with a wet, warm face cloth. Rub lightly all over your face and neck, then rinse thoroughly and repeat until clean. (Make sure you change and wash your face cloth every 24 hours to stop bacteria growing).
