Don’t let your cosmetics bag become a breeding ground for nasties. Here’s how to keep your makeup hygenic.
Foundation with a use-by date of 12 to 18 monthsoost foundation gets used before it goes bad. Foundations that contain sunscreen are a little more unstable, so 12 months is probably the limit, especially if they have been stored in warmer temperatures or left in the sun. If you’re not sure, check for an odd smell or a change in the colour or consistency. But don’t keep using old foundation as it can irritate your skin.
Lipstick The shelf life of lipstick is just 12 to 18 months because of the high moisture content and because lipsticks are usually applied directly to the lips, making them a prime target for the growth of bacteria. Check for a rancid odour or a change in consistency. And don’t have too many colours on the go at once or you won’t manage to finish them before they potentially go bad.
Eye shadow Anything applied around the eyes should be taken seriously. Powder eye-shadows have a longer shelf life than cream eye shadows (which have a higher moisture content) but with both types it’s really important to keep your eye shadow applicators or brushes clean (and properly dried) to avoid the growth of bacteria. Twelve months is the maximum life-span for eye shadows of any kind and don’t ever share your applicators, even with a friend.

**Six months is the absolute limit when it comes to mascara. The repercussions of using it for longer can be serious you run the risk of developing ghastly eye infections, including conjunctivitis. All those lash-fluttering “come hither” eyes you create would be well and truly forgotten. Don’t add water to freshen dried-up mascara just throw it out!
**Top Tip!
**The best way to get the maximum life from your makeup is to practice good hygiene when applying it. Make sure all your brushes are properly washed once a week. Leave them to dry naturally laid out flat on a towel and gently finished off with a warm hairdryer. If applying makeup with your fingers, always thoroughly wash and dry your hands first.
