It’s time for the big seasonal switch. Pare back your makeup for summer and go for lighter formulations and an understated look. “Less is more when it comes to summer,” says Rebecca Restrepo, a makeup artist for Elizabeth Arden. “When you’re wearing less clothing you should be wearing less makeup.”
Switch your base
Exchange your rich, creamy foundation for a lighter, more transparent one. Your skin tone changes seasonally and even if you don’t tan you may need to go a shade darker. Don’t be afraid of a glow – although if you have oily skin it will likely become oilier in summer so look for oil-free, mattifying formulations. For many, a BB cream or tinted moisturiser will be enough. But if you prefer more coverage try YSL Touche Éclat foundation $94. It’s illuminating and free of opaque powders.
Switch your blusher
Try a cream blusher such as Elizabeth Arden’s new Rose Aurora Ceramide Cream Blush in Honey $55, or Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Luminous Creme Blush in Tropical Glow $59.90.
Switch your eyeliner
Black liners and smoky eyes are over for summer. Change to a brown eyeliner or a pop of colour paired with a shimmery neutral shadow. Try Bobbi Brown’s Longwear Eyeliner $58 which comes in dark navy, hunter green and plum. The budget version is Australis’ 10 Hour Wear Pencils $13.50, in Aqua Attack or Bombastic Bronze.
Switch your brow pencil
Powdered or pencilled brows are dramatic, but for summer days dress them down. Just groom and hold in place with a little brow gel – even a skin balm will do at a pinch. Try Lancôme’s Hypnose Brow Shaper $28, or give MAC’s Marilyn Monroe Brow Finisher in Clear $36 a go.
Switch your lippy
Put away those heavy cream lipsticks – there are endless lighter options, from glosses and tints to stains. Clinique Chubby Sticks $40 are moisturising lip colour balms that give a sheer finish. Also look out for Revlon’s version launching mid-November. If you love a matte rather than a shiny finish check out Lancôme’s new L’Absolu Crème De Mat $57. It has the smoothness of a gloss but looks more like a stain and comes in three shades.
