My beauty philosophy is…Dressing up is for the night-time. During the day, I’m busy and life is messy. Mascara, moisturiser and lip gloss are all I bother with. Then, when evening comes, I love getting girly again.

The skincare products I can’t live without are…I really like Guinot for my face. I’m allergic to a lot of ranges, but have never had a problem with them. I love Dr Hauschka Rose Day Cream. Gardeners need moisture!

My haircare secret is…A little time spent on your fringe makes all the difference.  Always blow-wave and iron it and the rest of your hair can be tucked away. I also need to be extra careful to wear hats, as being in the garden my colour fades quickly in the New Zealand sun. Broad brims are great.

The must-have products in my make-up bag are…MAC Mineralise Skinfinish powder and also Viva Glam Lipglass.

My favourite beauty treat is…A massage. I don’t get there very often, but I love having the tension worked out.

My biggest beauty sin is…Not looking after my nails. I try, but somehow my hands never look like a proper girl’s. Even when I’ve had them done, they don’t look right. I have no idea how other women do it. I envy the beautifully manicured!

The best thing my mother taught me about beauty was…That I am beautiful. I never really believed her until I had my own daughter, but now I can see she is beautiful in a way that has not a lot to do with anything on the outside. I see it is the same beauty my nanny had, even when she was very old. I think it’s love. Being loved, loving – that’s what others really see. The rest, the dressing up and all, is fun, but it can’t hide an empty heart.
