Beauty tip: How to look well-rested

Your instant pick-me-up! How to flatter a tired face

Most new mothers will attest to the fact that they’ve never experienced tiredness like the first few months caring for a newborn – and unfortunately, this fatigue can show on our faces. L’Oréal Paris New Zealand make-up director Lisa Matson comes to the rescue, offering some simple ways to look instantly well-rested with a few product tips and tricks.

Where on a new mum’s face does sleep deprivation mostly show?

Skin and eyes predominantly – under-eye bags with dark crescents and dull skin are the usual telltale signs.

What are your top tips for disguising these to look more presentable?

Wear an illuminating primer under your foundation, or opt for a foundation or BB cream with illuminating properties. To disguise dark circles, select an under-eye concealer that’s a couple of shades lighter than your base. A pale-toned or white eyeliner applied to the inner rim will help disguise red rims, making eyes appear wider. You could also apply a dot of cream shimmer eyeshadow to the inner corners to brighten and open up the eyes.

Can you suggest a five-minute face for new mums?

Using a BB cream or cushion foundation is a great way to obtain soft, illuminated coverage quickly. Blend a little concealer under the eyes, then apply a soft wash of blush to the apples of the cheek and over the eyelids. Finish with mascara and a bright, pretty lipstick or gloss.

Skin can change during pregnancy, with some new mums experiencing hyperpigmentation, acne or rosacea. How can these problems be covered up effectively?

All of these issues can be covered with concealer –the trick is to find or blend concealers that match your base. If redness is a problem, apply a CC cream or concealer with a green base before applying your regular concealer. It’s also important to cover only the area that is affected in order to avoid looking overly made-up. If you’re short on time (what new mum isn’t?!), mineral foundations can give you good coverage without looking too mask-like. Plus, they have the added benefit of not irritating blemishes further.
