What you need to know
Mineral foundation is made from finely ground minerals such as mica, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide blended into a powder. It should be free of preservatives, fillers like talc, oil and chemical dyes so it’s gentle and won’t clog your pores.
Mineral foundation is fantastic for sensitive skin, those prone to redness, acne or oiliness, and it works for all skin tones. Some of them aren’t so brilliant for more mature or dry skin, but by choosing a lightweight formula and applying it sparingly, even those women who fit into that category can get great long-lasting coverage.
Mineral foundation does provide some sun protection, but you’ll still need to apply a sunscreen first if you spend time outdoors.
How to:
Make sure you match foundation to your skin – it’s better for it to be slightly too dark than too light.
Allow your moisturiser or sunscreen to fully absorb before applying, or blot off any excess. You won’t get good coverage if your skin is greasy.
Use a kabuki brush. This has a short handle and stiff bristles, making it ideal to buff powder onto the skin.
Dip the brush into powder, tap off the excess and apply in small, circular buffing motions. Use lighter pressure around wrinkles, nostrils and lips, and avoid the under-eye area.
You can layer more loose powder on for extra coverage, but don’t overdo it or your skin will look dull.
Use mineral makeup as a concealer by dipping a small eyeshadow brush into the powder and dabbing onto the blemish only.
If you think your coverage is looking a bit heavy, use a clean blusher brush to remove the excess.
You can now buy eyeshadows, blushers and lipsticks based on minerals – not just foundation.
