Makeup secrets from a professional – a lesson in application

Margaret Mackenzie has been working as a professional makeup artist for five years, with a background from both the Napolean Perdis academy and oAC makeup. In part two of our four - part series, Margaret takes time out from her busy schedule to give some expert advice on makeup application.

A lot of women purchase expensive makeup, but don’t achieve the look they want. What are some of your tips for successful makeup application?

When applying foundation, make sure you can see your chest. Matching your foundation to your face is one thing, but if your chest and shoulders are much darker, you will end up with a pale face.

A common mistake is foregoing makeup brushes. Good brushes are the tools used to achieve makeup perfection. So many women want to achieve a professional look, yet don’t want to invest in and learn how to use brushes. You may have heard the mantra before: ‘blend, blend, blend’. It is impossible to achieve effective blending with your fingers, no matter how clean you think they are.

Lastly – a lot of women purchase mascara, then feel disappointed when their lashes don’t match the cover image on the packaging. Mascara takes time to apply if you want the full effect. A hurried swipe in the morning will not do your lashes justice.

Margaret’s expert advice:

First of all, if you do end up with a lighter face, simply sweep a deeper bronzer than usual to bring colour back to the face and neck.

To get those knockout lashes – I suggest first curling your lashes, spending up to five minutes on each side. This seems like a long time but you will notice the results! Taking the mascara wand, apply your mascara in zig-zag motions from the root to the tips of your lashes, which will help to create volume and fullness.

Rather than spending time and money on eye shadows, applying mascara carefully could be all you need. You’ll be surprised at how effective lashes alone can be at enhancing your eyes. I personally feel that the less make up you can use the better.
