How to use bronzer

Warm, summery days are all about minimal makeup - a swipe of gloss on the lips, mascara on the lashes and, most importantly, healthy, glowing skin. If you're only going to buy one new product this summer, make it a bronzer.

Given that I’m so very talented at streaking self-tan I’m pretty nervous about using it on my face but there are many great fake tans now on the market. Try one that is tinted so you can see what you’re getting and where you’re going with it. Plus with tinted self-tans, you can intensify your tan by increasing the amount you apply (I went for a light, sunkissed glow.) Additionally, try and pick one that is enriched with vitamin E and moisturisers and many on the market no longer have that yucky fake-tan smell.

The alternative is to use one of the self-tanning moisturisers, which build up a tan slowly. Start application with areas that naturally see more sun, like forehead, nose and cheeks, then apply a lighter layer to hollow areas such as eye contours and above the chin.

BRoNZING

  • Faking a healthy glow on the face is as easy as putting on a little bronzer. But remember it’s not about changing the shade of your skin – it’s about enhancing and warming your complexion.

  • If you have a lot of unwanted redness in your skin, bronzer will help neutralise it.

  • Choose a bronzer that’s only a couple of shades darker than your skin tone and steer clear of anything that looks too orange or muddy brown. You’re looking for more of a gold.

  • To get rid of any excess powder before applying, tap your brush or rub it in the palm of your hand.

  • Start applying bronzer beneath the cheekbones, working back towards the temples, then dust the apples of your cheeks and blend.

  • Cream or liquid bronzers help give dry skin a dewy glow. Apply a dab of it with your fingers and blend.

  • one great advantage of powders is that after dusting your cheeks, you can then brush any residue lightly over your neck, shoulders and decolletage.

  • Be subtle, applying bronzer lightly and layering it up where you want a greater depth of colour.

  • Shimmery bronzers are lovely for night-time but go with more of a light sheen for during the day.

  • As well as on the cheeks, use a light dusting of bronzer around the outer perimeter of your face, along the hairline and on your forehead.

  • Try layering a little bronzer over your usual blusher to give yourself a pretty summer glow.
