The key to getting more volume is to allow the hair that you have moulded around a brush or a roller to cool. This could mean that you use two brushes and allow one to cool in the hair while you are using the other. With heated rollers, allow the hair to cool fully before removing them. The transition from hot to cold is the crucial element in setting hair.
