Top hairdresser John Webster of Auckland’s olette salon tells us what’s hot for hair this season.
This summer is all about layered, textured styles and we’re concentrating on softness and natural movement. Versatility is important too.
It’s Christmas party season, so if you’re getting your hair pinned up or curled for a glamorous event on the weekend, a soft textured style will fall into a more natural beachy look when brushed out or roughened up.
The top colour trends are rich and warm, with blondes staying creamy, not platinum.
Contrasting tones are also being used in short styles to emphasise texture and layer definition.
Celeb styles to copy
I’m having more clients bring in pictures of catwalk trends and professional models, as opposed to celebrities, at the moment. The main emphasis seems to be on bigger, fuller hair.
Sometimes I need to explain to my clients that extensions and hairpieces are used to create the illusion of thicker hair. Also, the correct volumising product, a good hairdryer and a large round brush are a must – especially if you have to compensate for finer hair and are craving the Kim Kardashian look!
For the beachy look
A good haircut is a must for a beachy ‘do, regardless of length and hair density. on short hair, swept-to-the-side fringes with textured layers look very flattering.
When going for short hair, it’s softer and more feminine to go for shaggy texture around the edges. With mid-length hair, a concave bob (think Victoria Beckham’s style) with rough playful layers looks gorgeous, especially when scrunch-dried.
When going for the longer look, think Rosie Huntington-Whiteley from Transformers. She pulls off the soft, beachy wave beautifully. If you don’t have a natural wave, you can use tongs, but less is more in this case – brush the curls out so they look natural and not too contrived.
