Fair skin
You can choose a lip shade from either end of the spectrum, like soft baby pink or deep fuchsia. But stick to matte – as soon as you go glossy, it can look too Barbie.
Try: Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Ultra Lipstick in Blushing Pink, $52
Olive skin
Never go lighter than your natural lip colour. Stick with strong, deep pigments such as hot pink. Keep it from looking too dated by avoiding bronzer and try pairing it with a navy eyeliner.
Try: L’Oréal Paris Color Riche Lipstick in Crazy Fuchsia, $19.99
Dark skin
The deeper the lipstick shade, the more natural and soft your lips will look, so choose a hue with an intense pigment to cover your natural colour.
Try: Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolour in Addiction, $26.50
Still not sure?
Try picking a pink with the same undertone as your natural lip shade. The best way to do this is to test the colour on the pad of your fingertip. The skin here is close to your natural lip colour, so it’s the most accurate spot for testing a lipstick.
