Facing facts

When it comes to anti-ageing skincare, it's getting difficult to keep up. The science behind those jars of creams and serums is constantly evolving, with new ingredients and products appearing all the time. The good news is the latest generation of anti-agers are more potent than ever... but there are a few myths it's worth setting straight before you start applying them.

oYTH: Anti-ageing creams work better at night

Your skin will respond to these formulas at any hour of the day or night. Products containing retinol, however, are better used before bedtime because they can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Protective skincare products – ie those that have an SPF or are enriched with antioxidants – are designed to be used as day creams.

FACT: If you don’t protect your skin, wrinkle creams are pointless

If you don’t use a high SPF with UVA/ UVB protection then you may as well not bother. No wrinkle cream stands a chance. The same goes for smoking. Eating badly and not getting enough sleep don’t help much either. And a really easy tip to follow – sip water from a glass rather than a bottle to avoid getting fine lines around the mouth.

oYTH: Expensive is better

There are some fantastic well-priced products on the market. What you’ll find, though, is a bit of a “trickle down” effect  The expensive premium brands get the new science first and then after a year or so you’ll see those buzzy new ingredients appearing in more affordable skincare.

FACT: Anti-agers shouldn’t irritate the skin

If a product is causing flaking, redness, rashes, itchiness or puffiness stop using it. Today’s wrinkle treatments are packed full of active ingredients and if your skin reacts with irritation it’s not a sign the product is working – quite the opposite. In fact, anti-agers work much better on healthy skin. It can be worth introducing some products to your skin slowly – especially those containing retinol.

oYTH: A good project shows results fast

Some skincare may give you a temporary plumping effect or contain light-reflective particles to give you instant glow but it’ll take weeks before skin really looks smoother and months before the appearance of fine lines is reduced. It may take up to a year of dedicated use ,for a product to give its best results.
