Dump dull browns to look cool and warm

Kiwis are famously big buyers of brown eyeshadow and browny-pink lipsticks. There's nothing wrong with the nude look but it's dull if that's all you ever wear. Colour is an instant mini-makeover and not as tricky as you might think.

Why are we so afraid of colour? Auckland image consultant Rose Lally says it’s because many of us lack confidence applying makeup and worry about stuff like matching eyeshadow shades to lipstick.

“But colour is the most inexpensive fashion update,” says Rose. “When you wear the right colour it can be both youthful and illuminating. The key is the intensity of colour – a youthful skin can take a bigger contrast while a more mature skin needs a lower contrast and a more natural-looking application.”

Rose suggests changing your look each season by choosing an on-trend shade that suits you. “Aim for a synergy between your eye, hair and skin colour and the shade of your makeup and your clothes,” she advises.

How to:

Colour analysis has been around since the 1980s and visiting a style consultant to have your colours read is still the best way to be certain of picking the most flattering shades – they’ll take your skin tone, eye colour and hair shade into account.

Generally speaking though, you suit a cool palette if you have pinkish undertones to the skin and a warm palette if your skin has golden undertones. Most colour analysts divide people into seasons – winter and summer are cool palettes, while autumn and spring are warm.
