Research tells us that 40% of all New Zealand women who colour their hair do so at home. Another 40% go to the salon, and 20% switch between the two. If you do colour your hair at home, how well do you know what you’re doing? It really is pretty simple – the keys to colouring your hair at home are choosing the right product and colour for the job, and being organised.
Seven tips for stress-free home hair colouring:
- Don’t be unrealistic. For drastic colour changes, you need to visit a professional colourist at a salon – there is too much room for error.
- Don’t be a smarty pants – read the instructions. Each and every time you colour your hair, you need to read and re-read the instructions – you are, after all, putting chemicals on your head.
- Get sorted. Make sure you have all the things you need before you start colouring and place them all within easy reach.
- Don’t shampoo your hair before colouring. A little bit of natural oil left on your scalp will help protect it from the dye.
- Do a patch test. Disasters do happen and it’s better they happen on a discreet patch rather than over your whole head.
- If you find yourself in trouble with semi-permanent hair colour, all you can do is buy some really cheap shampoo and wash your hair repeatedly until the colour is washed away. Follow up with a good conditioning treatment.
- If you find yourself in trouble with permanent hair colour, go straight to a professional salon – they may be able to fix it.
