Colour me crimson!

Red is a beauty classic that never goes out of fashion. It’s a shade that says glamour, sexiness and daring. But all reds are not created equal. Some are pink in tone, others have brown, orange, and even blue tones. Makeup experts insist there’s a red lipstick out there to suit everyone. Personally, I’m still looking for the shade that’s right for me. Here are some tips to help you pick your ideal shade of red:

  • If lips are bold and red, then it’s important that the rest of your makeup isn’t fighting for attention and your  complexion looks clear and bright. So:

  • Tone down any redness in your skin before using red lipstick.

  • Work out which shade of red lipstick suits you best. Blue-based usually suit those with pale, yellow-toned or olive skins, but they tend to bring out any skin redness. Pink, brown and orange-based reds tend to be more flattering to most of us.

  • Keep lips from looking too flat by using a top coat of clear gloss.

  • Stay minimal with the rest of your makeup. The classic Hollywood look of a little eyeliner and black mascara is the way to go. Defined eyebrows also look good, but don’t go mad with the pencil. Use short strokes to create shape,  then blend with your fingers.

  • Go sheer with a red gloss if an opaque red lipstick is too much for you.
