Buffer zone: Exfoliate your way to smoother, sexier skin

When it comes to keeping the skin on our bodies in tip-top condition, exfoliation plays a key role. Dead skin cells build up on your skin’s surface, leaving you with a dry, dull look. Exfoliating removes this layer of dead skin cells, leaving your skin glowing and allowing moisturisers and oils to penetrate more deeply.

Exfoliating also plays a key role in self-tanning preparation – it ensures the product doesn’t cling to any dry spots, giving you tell-tale dark patches.

Exfoliating body scrubs are a passion of mine and I am never without one. However, I believe we need to tread carefully with our skin and I get the best results by using a body scrub only once a week, occasionally twice.

To avoid a nasty stinging sensation and/or a rash, always use exfoliating body scrubs on damp skin and never exfoliate after shaving your legs. Always exfoliate, then shave.

I’ve rounded up seven of the best scrubs around but if you’re caught short, you can always make your own by mixing a little sea salt with some olive oil.
