Winter Lipsticks

A slick of gloss might see you through the summer months but winter is all about the grown-up glamour of lipstick. Whether you prefer bold or natural, here are the trends you need to know.

Lipstick tricks

If you want a natural look… the most flattering shade will be one to two tones darker than your natural skin colour (never go paler!).

If lipstick bleed is an issue… before applying, line and fill in the lips with a coloured pencil or a clear liner. Try Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lip pencil in Clear $46.

If you have lip hairs… remove them as they’ll make it impossible to create a sharp edge when using bold colour.

If your teeth could be whiter… steer clear of brown shades which will only make them look yellow. Cool reds and pinks will be more flattering.

Plum shades

Are you loving Lorde’s purple lipstick? The good news is wine/plum shades suit both cool and warm skin tones. For Lorde’s look, wait until June 27 when her very own shade, MAC Lipstick Pure Heroine $40, appears in Kiwi stores. In the meantime, try Avon Overnature Lipstick in Cherry Berry $22.99 or Dollface Lipstick in Royal $31.50.

Pink is the new red

A flush of pink on the lips brightens a smile and brings luminosity to the complexion.
