Defined eyes look bolder, bigger and are more striking. Editorial Director Sarah Henry and NEXT Editor Rachael Russell stepped out with a smokey eye and a retro liner look for NEXT Magazine’s annual Woman of the Year event. We asked Lisa Matson, Makeup Director of L’Oreal Paris how she achieved these stunning looks.

Sarah Henry rocked a smokey eye look at the NEXT WOTY Awards
Sarah Henry
“With Sarah’s look I wanted to ensure her makeup matched the glamour and colour of her stunning outfit. Smokey eyes are a great go-to for a special occasion. But instead of just applying a black eyeshadow and eyeliner incorporate a metallic and/or jewel coloured eye shadow for extra glam. Beautiful eyes need beautifully defined brows, try the L’Oreal Paris Brow Artist Genius Kit.
Match a Smokey or bold eye look with understated lips – a light to medium toned lipstick and/or gloss is always the most flattering option; I used Colour Riche by Naomi in La Vie Nen Rose.
To get a youthful radiance to your skin start with the L’Oréal Paris Base Magique Transforming Soothing Primer followed by Infallible Matte 24HR foundation – the perfect base for flawless skin all night long.”

How to get Sarah’s L’Oreal look
Give your face subtle definition by applying the dark shade from the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Sculpt palette along the base of your cheekbones, temples and jawline or to any area you wish to reshape or ‘slim down’.
Always add colour to cheeks, try True Match blush – to add a pretty flush to the apples of the cheeks.”

Rachael Russell channeled vintage glamour at the event
Rachael Russell
“I created Rachael’s makeup look to compliment her retro inspired gown and hair-do. Soft and pretty with a little old school glamour was my aim.
A lightweight foundation enhances a great complexion without covering it up. I used L’Oreal Paris Lumi Magique foundation.
A retro eye look wouldn’t be anything without a defined eye line. Use liquid or gel eyeliner to get the most intensity and wear. If you have the right eye shape then add a flick to the outer corners for even more authenticity.
Apply false lashes to get that extra retro/glam edge or curl your lashes with a eyelash curler (blast with your hairdryer first for extra hold) then apply a lash building mascara, paying extra attention to the outer lashes.
Brows are one of the most important features in a retro inspired makeup, so make them bold and perfectly sculpted.”

How to emulate Rachael’s look
It’s important to find the right colour blush for your skin tone. L’Oreal Paris True Match has a number of options. Apply it lightly for just a kiss of warmth.
A nude lipstick will always look flattering if it is 1-2 shades darker than your skin tone.”
