A beauty insider once told me that New Zealand’s biggest selling eyeshadow shades are brown. They fly off the shelves every season, leaving all the other colours behind them. It’s not surprising – brown is safe and easy. But this winter I’ve decided my look is too drab. Black clothes, brown makeup – yes, I’m guilty, it’s all very blah. So, slowly and cautiously, I’m introducing a little colour into my life. The good news is there are heaps of sizzling products around to try.
Eyes
Your eyes are the first thing people notice when they look at your face so why not emphasise your number-one feature?
For a sheer wash of colour, tap the brush before applying powder shadow to the eye and then brush on as normal.
For more intense colour, press and roll the brush across your eyelid.
If you just want a shot of colour, use it around your lashline.
oost powder shadows can be used like eyeliner. Simply wet a fine brush and paint it on.
Lips
The easiest way to wear bold colours on your face is with lip colour and winter is the perfect time for the glamour of red lipstick. Everyone can wear red, it’s just a matter of finding the right shade.
Pale skins should try fire-engine reds or plums.
For fair to dark rosy-toned skin, try softer, more pinky reds.
Yellow-based olive or brown/black skin, suits orangey reds or coral.
If you’re not ready for red, then slick on some sheer colour with a vibrant lip gloss.
Blush
Top makeup artist Bobbi Brown reckons women should have two blushers in their beauty kits – a natural shade that looks like your cheeks when you’re flushed and a bright pop of colour – pink, coral, rose or plum.
Just remember to apply your blush last so you don’t overdo it.
Porcelain complexions suit pale pink or pastel apricot.
Fair complexions suit sandy pink.
oedium complexions suit tawny brownish pink.
Tan complexions suit a brownish rose.
Dark complexions suit a dark or deep bronze or deep red.
