Every woman needs the following in her makeup kit: a great everyday nude shade, a signature colour for dress-up, a shimmery gloss to highlight and a lip pencil.
The most flattering nude shade will be one to two tones darker than the natural colour of your lips. Ideally you’d go shopping for a new lippy with no makeup on at all. You know you’ve picked the right shade when your skin and eyes look brighter instantly. If you don’t fancy using testers on your lips then try out shades on your fingertips instead- they’re closer to your lip colour and texture than the back of your hand.
When choosing a lip shade, think about how it’s going to balance with your eye makeup. Light, neutral lips are the perfect contrast to strong eyes.
Use a lip brush to apply darker, brighter colours that need precision. Lighter corals should be fine applied straight from the tube.
As we age, our lips thin and the colour fades. That’s why it’s so important to update the shades you use. Toss out the dull browns and beiges that worked a decade ago and add colour and vibrancy back to your lips.
If lipstick bleed is a problem, stick to creamy matte lipsticks and add a little gloss on the top – this won’t bleed because it will stick to the lipstick. You can also try using a little concealer around the edge of the lip, but blend it properly because you don’t want a visible line.
If your lips are flaky, exfoliate gently with a damp flannel before applying your lipstick.
