In a shock move on Sunday’s episode of The Bachelor New Zealand, Cantabrian Sarah Whales-Martin chose not to continue on in the Three reality series, telling Zac she felt it was her time to go home.

While the Bachelor star was understandably surprised by the news, ultimately, he let her go – revealing that he respected the decision she had made.

Sitting down with Woman’s Day to discuss her big exit, the 28-year-old earthquake claims technician told us she knew she would never be able to open up in the same way that the others had.

“I thought I knew what I was getting myself into. But I just thought I would naturally overcome the whole environment, put all of myself out there, but it did require some adjusting to ‘perform’ if you want – I just couldn’t do that. It just felt too unnatural for me,” she revealed.

“I just never really adjusted to the environment. Zac was quite open with his feelings and I felt bad that I couldn’t do the same.”

While some viewers might have wished the surf life-saving coach had fought harder to keep Sarah around, she tells us he wouldn’t have been able to change her mind.

“That’s what I liked about Zac, he could see that the decision wasn’t made lightly – he could not have persuaded me to stay,” she said, adding that she had been thinking about it for some time.

With Sarah’s departure, there are just four Bachelorettes left on the Three series – Claudia Hoskins, Lily McManus, Viarni Bright and Hannah Howley.

The Bachelor NZ continues tonight at 7.30pm on Three.
