For over 20 years, Shortland Street has delivered the best Christmas cliffhangers on TV. This year, fans can expect to be on the edge of their seat with a murder on the cards. Who will survive to see 2017?

To prep for Monday’s epic episode, we look back at some of the best end-of-year finales from the archives.

In the first Christmas cliffhanger, Hone Ropata accidentally killed a man and, prompted by his bad-boy brother Darryl Neilson, Stuart stopped Kirsty Knight’s wedding.

The year that set the standard for the killer Christmas specials! Kirsty and Lionel Skeggin’s plane crashed, while Caroline Buxton was found guilty of murder.

Without a doubt, this was one of the biggest end-of-year finales we’ve ever seen in the show’s history. After six months of murder and mayhem, the Ferndale serial killer was finally revealed to be likeable nurse Joey Henderson.

It was the start of a murder-mystery that kept us guessing for months. An unseen gunman shot “Dr Evil” Ethan Pierce as he packed his bags to skip town.

To end Shorty’s 20th birthday year, terminally ill Luke Durville and Bella Cooper married, but Bella’s parents were tragically hit by TK Samuels’ truck.

Tune in to TVNZ 2 at 7pm on Monday, December 19, to catch the hour-long finale event
