As season eight of MasterChef Australia kicks off this week, we grab some time with foodie extraordinaire and judge Gary Mehigan, 49, to see what gets his tummy rumbling.
Which series of MasterChef has been your favourite so far?
Series one is always going to be my favourite because it’s like having your first child.
You have some exciting special guests this season, such as British three-Michelin-star chef Heston Blumenthal. What does he bring to the table?
Heston brings his whimsical cooking madness. He does four pop-ups in Melbourne during the week he’s with us and they’re absolutely brilliant! He always brings a twist to everything, which makes his food difficult, if not impossible, to achieve.
What are you looking out for as a judge?
We are doing auditions at the moment for next year’s show, and it’s about finding people who have a passion for food and can talk freely about it.
If you had to live off one meal forever, what would it be?
Chocolate, but I wouldn’t live very long! Actually, I’m a bread fanatic. I love the idea that man can live on bread alone. It’s great that you can take ingredients like flour and water, then put them together to form something so delicious and nutritious. It really is an amazing thing.
What’s your go-to seasoning?
Coriander. I’m a little obsessed with it!
MasterChef Australia airs Wednesday-Friday at 7.30pm on TV ONE
