Jaimie’s body of evidence

The mysterious star of Blindspot offers up some clues about herself

With its gripping storyline, New York as the backdrop and gorgeous actress Jaimie Alexander at the helm, it’s no surprise TV2’s Blindspot has fans in a frenzy. As the hit show, which tells the tale of a Jane Doe who wakes up in Times Square with no memory of who she is but covered in tattoos, continues this week, we sit down with its lovely leading lady.

We’re loving Blindspot so far. What do you think sets it apart?

It’s a good show. I mean, I’ve done some stuff that I think has sucked, but this show is so good, I can’t wait for you guys to see the rest of it. It’s a scary thing to not know who you are, where you are, what day it is, and to have all these people doing tests on you and probing and prodding. It’s a very heightened situation obviously, but it’s very relatable. She’s not a superhero – she’s a normal young woman.

How did you find filming that dramatic opening sequence in New York?

Really cold! We shot that in March and it was chilly. I love New York – I’ve always loved it. I feel like personally I fit in there better than Los Angeles or anywhere else, but it’s a character and I think anybody else would say that if they film there. It’s always a character in whatever project you’re doing. There’s just no place in the world like it.

Will we see a different tattoo every week?

You’ll see a lot of different tattoos every week, but they’re all interconnected and the way they’ve done it is so incredible. Everything is extremely coded.

What kind of training have you had to do for the role?

I’ve been training with special forces Seal Team Six and this guy named Carlson Ulrich, who’s fantastic. He’s trained me in all my weapons. I’ve been through Seal training this week, which is probably why I look a little tired. I’m learning how to do this stuff for real. I’m highly trainable. I pick up this stuff easily. I already have a fight background – I was the captain of my high school wrestling team. It’s been really intense, but I want to do it justice.

What drew you to this part in the first place?

Everything – the people behind it, the character, the cast. Everything seemed to fit, everything fell into place and it was the right timing. Jane Doe already has so many female fans.

Why do you think that is?

I think it’s because you get female roles, in which they are written as the victim, or they’re written so tough that there is nothing else about them that is going on. This is a very good medium – there’s vulnerability, there’s sadness, there’s pain, but also there’s this internal fight she has – she wants to help people. I mean, everybody can relate to what’s going on. Everybody, at one time or another, has felt like an outcast, has wanted to be accepted and has needed a human connection. That’s really the sole basis for the show.

Blindspot airs Sunday at 8.30pm on TV One & TVNZ On Demand

Jaimie went through extensive training for the part – and with her background in wrestling, she was a natural at picking up the skills!
